People often say that the UK used to be a “Christian country” when they see some of the social changes that are currently underway.
I totally disagree with that for a number of reasons. The first is that only a human made in God’s image has the possibility of becoming a Christian. Only a human is in need of salvation and rescuing from their sin. And also using such phrases tends to link the idea of “Christianity” with some of the less salubrious escapades of this fine nation.
It follows that if a nation is “Christian” then the activities it pursues will also be either “Christian” or will serve as a flag as to how far the “Christian nation” has fallen. Take slavery as an example. Great Britain was once one of the nations who embraced slavery in certain of its foreign dominions with a most ruthless, inhuman and efficient nature. Is slavery of this nature somehow Biblical? Of course not, but the link between a “Christian nation” and slavery has been made and justified in the minds of those who wish to believe it.
But know this: Hard times will come in the last days. 2 For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, proud, demeaning, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 unloving, irreconcilable, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, without love for what is good, 4 traitors, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, 5 holding to the form of godliness but denying its power. Avoid these people.2 Timothy 3:1-5
Regardless of that there are among a nation that may define itself as “Christian”, certain morals and social norms which are themselves derived from Biblical concepts. Marriage and the Family stand strongly in this field. Monogamy, continent and chasteness develop from this and help sustain marriage and the family as the bedrock of a muscular, confident and thriving society. A society where consideration is given to others first, where those who need alms are helped and where society works together in such a way as to hinder the progress of social ills such as poverty and crime.
What we have seen develop, especially since the 1960s is a creeping perversion of all that is good in this nation. Holy Matrimony and the family have been attacked and perverted into a charade of what God desires. Respect has been treated with disdain. We have become a nation of people whose main aim is to seek pleasure, sexual or otherwise in whatever way we fancy, regardless of the harm that may befall ourselves, those around us and society in general.
This blog is me posting about how this nation and world is going further and further away from what it should be, and how persecution will increase for those faithful to the Creator’s plan.
Of course we’ve been going to hell in a handcart for a long time now. Read Schindler / Spurgeon on the Down-Grade controversy and more recently look at Dr Martyn Lloyd-Jones and his comments on ecumenicism.
