Avoid Rebellion

Saw a tweet from one someone on Twitter who I follow which was a post from the book of 1 Sam 15 and a word warning against rebellion.

1 Samuel 15:23 (HCSB)

[23] For rebellion is like the sin of divination,
and defiance is like wickedness and idolatry.
Because you have rejected the word of the LORD,
He has rejected you as king.

A good warning and one which I could have done with as a new Christian a number of years ago. I had not long been baptised at my local Church of England church and was involved in a house group. Although I wasn’t officially leading the house group I did get to become the de facto leader. It was around the time that the CofE was beginning to purposely move away from the historic Christian understanding of sexuality and a number of local parish churches had written a letter to the Diocesan Bishop reminding him of the Church’s traditional adherence and understanding of Scripture. The rebuff we got was one of a number of things that were leading me away from the CofE at that time.

As a house group we had gelled well giving the impression that all was well. But it wasn’t well. We were drifting from the authority of the local church and it culminated in us not joining in specific topics for discussion and also at my insistence not meeting once a month with the other house groups. Seemed the right thing to do at the time but looking back it really wasn’t. I was under the age old sin of pride. Thinking that our house group had something the others hadn’t and that we were right when all about was wrong.

It was eventually made clear to us that we couldn’t continue with such behaviour so we did eventually fall back into line. As Christians we are called to be under authority, not acting independently. Not my proudest moment.
